I am entranced by dark woods, weak northern light, banks of fog and distant horizons. In one sense, I am a romantic at heart, romantic in the 19th century manner in which nature elements reflect human feelings. In these pieces, I am working with brooding, nostalgic, atmospheric landscapes that are not representative of any particular place. I am striving to create works in which it is unclear whether the images represent symbolic dream-like spaces, or simply moody landscapes.
A love affair with the surface of the paper
Surface and process were my primary concerns in the making of these works. I began by coating the the paper with an acrylic gel medium to obtain an irregular and textured surface. I then tried to pull out (“draw”) the image by rubbing, sprinkling or brushing on graphite powder, and erasing and sometimes sanding, until I was satisfied that I had discovered the image.
MATERIALS and DIMENSIONS
Graphite powder on paper prepared with matte acrylic gel medium. Images 6″ high x 9″ wide.
The first three were exhibited in a solo show titled IN SEARCH OF EDEN at Gallery 1313, Toronto, June 2001.
Reflections was awarded third prize in the Second Annual Drawing Show, Jan 2003, at the John B. Aird Gallery, Toronto. Hills was also shown.
